"Rhapsody in Schmaltz: Yiddish Food and Why We Can’t Stop Eating It" by Michael Wex. Both serious history and family stories about traditional dishes.

"Washing the Dead" by Michelle Brafman. A novel, set in the Chicago area, about three generations of women.
